Marios Politis

Marios Politis is a Professor of Neurology, the Director of Neurodegeneration Imaging Group (NIG) and the Director of Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre at the University of Exeter. He is also a Consultant Neurologist and an Honorary Clinical Professor.  

Professor Marios Politis’s previous roles include Safra Clinical Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Neurology Unit, both at King’s College London, and Visiting Clinical Senior Lecturer in Neurology at Imperial College London. He also formerly held the post of Clinical Investigator at GE Hammersmith Imanet.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and of the European Academy of Neurology, Marios has received many awards for his work, including the Jon Stolk Award in Movement Disorders that was given in recognition of his significant contributions to movement disorders research. He was also the recipient of the HD Insights Paper of the Year Award in 2016, and received the IMPETus Award for Innovative and Outstanding PET Research in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The research that Marios undertakes includes the use of Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) molecular imaging, and functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The Neurodegeneration Imaging Group (NIG) was conceived and designed in 2012 while Marios was in post at Imperial College London. The organisation was initially hosted in the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King’s College London between 2013 to 2019; expanding rapidly during this period, it became one of the most successful academic groups in the world.
